Many of Nintendo’s beloved IP have had less successful iterations, such as the Super Mario Bros movie and games developed for Phillip’s CD-i console. After a few infamous failures from the 80s and 90s, Nintendo put a lot more attention to quality assurance and oversight to subcontracted developers. These failures would have been mostly forgotten without the advent of meme culture and youtube. I discovered the CD-i Zelda games through Youtube meme videos making fun of the very amateurish animation cutscenes found in both games. I believe the problem wasn’t that the developers were completely incompetent, as much as woefully understaffed and underqualified to produce a game for one of Nintendo’s most popular franchise. For a game that maybe had some potential I designed a cover art that reimagined the game in a good light. After all, it is pretty sad that the ONLY Zelda game, in which she is the hero, is also one of the worst game of the franchise. I hope that, in the future, Zelda gets a good game where she is the sole hero of the story.
Here’s another illustration I made featuring Zelda from the game The Wand of Gamelon.
